Managing Invasive Alien Plants
requires any landowner, occupier of land, or person in control of the land or any person in control of a listed category 1a, 1b, 2, and 3 invasive species to prevent the escape and spread of the species, including its growth or spread of propagules, and must control any specimen that escapes or spreads. Furthermore, a person may not carry out a restricted activity involving a specimen of an alien species without a permit issued in terms of Chapter 7 of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act 10 of 2004 (NEMBA). Because they are classified as Category 2 plants, permits for the cultivation of these plants on the property need to be obtained from the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development. We have noticed an increase in monitoring industries of both regulatory (e.g. Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development) and private standards (E.g. SIZA Environmental, Farming for the Future, and Rainforest Alliance).
What will Skyvines do? • We will be facilitating the application of these Demarcation permits • Quick and hassle-free process for your producers to obtain their required permits • Conduct on-site risk assessments if required • Invasive Alien Clearing Plan – To determine what Invasive Alien Plants occur in the area and develop a clearing plan which should be followed to manage Invasive on the property • We will conduct site visits and identify all IAPs on the property • A clearing plan will be developed to be followed for three years
Why is this required? NEMBA – the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act 10 of 2004, required that any Landowners are under a legal obligation to control the IAPs occurring on their property. For properties where IAPs are present and the total property is larger than 1 Ha = landowners should be in possession of an IAP control and monitoring plan. A clearing plan is also required for Standards such as that of SIZA Environmental, Farming For the Future, Rainforest Alliance, etc.
